U.S. President Donald Trump has declared that Iran was given “chance after chance” to strike a nuclear deal, but chose defiance instead. In a stern warning, Trump urged Tehran to agree to Washington’s terms “before it is too late.”
His statement came after Israel launched a series of airstrikes early Friday targeting multiple military and nuclear sites across Iran. The Iranian government has confirmed the deaths of Major General Hossein Salami, commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Major General Mohammad Bagheri, Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces. Several media outlets also reported that other high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists were killed.
Posting on his social media platform Truth Social later that day, Trump wrote, “I gave Iran chance after chance to make a deal on its nuclear program.” He said he had strongly warned Iran’s leadership to “just do it,” and implied that Israel’s massive military response was a direct consequence of Tehran’s refusal to comply.
Trump also stressed that Israel is equipped with a vast arsenal of U.S.-made weapons and is prepared for “even more brutal” strikes. However, he added that a chance still remains to avoid further escalation.
“Iran must make a deal before there is nothing left,” Trump said, “and preserve what was once known as the Iranian Empire.”
Since April, the United States and Iran had engaged in multiple rounds of negotiations in Oman over Tehran’s nuclear program, but no breakthrough was achieved. A new round of talks was scheduled for Sunday, but following the Israeli attacks, Iran has reportedly pulled out.
The U.S. has consistently demanded that Iran halt all uranium enrichment activities. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi previously dismissed this demand as “completely detached from the reality of negotiations.”
Currently, Iran enriches uranium to 60% purity – far exceeding the 3.67% limit set under the now-defunct 2015 nuclear deal, which collapsed after President Trump unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from the agreement during his first term.
