Ujjain, August 22, 2024. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav stressed the importance of modernizing and digitizing libraries, highlighting their crucial role in the ever-changing educational and social environment. While virtually inaugurating the international conference at Vikram University, Ujjain, titled "The Role and Challenges of Libraries in Changing Educational and Social Contexts," the Chief Minister emphasized the need for discussions on modernization, automation, networking, and the concept of green libraries. He asserted that these efforts are essential to maintaining the relevance of libraries in contemporary education systems and ensuring they remain a vital source of knowledge in society.
Libraries Safeguard Knowledge Just as Banks Safeguard Wealth: Chief Minister
Chief Minister Dr. Yadav likened libraries to banks, stating that just as banks protect and grow society's and the nation's wealth, libraries preserve, enhance, and disseminate knowledge. He reflected on the historical significance of libraries in India, mentioning the renowned libraries of Nalanda, Vikramshila, and Takshashila, which were once centers of knowledge but were tragically targeted by foreign invaders. Ujjain, known for its confluence of religion, spirituality, and science, has always been a significant center. Dr. Yadav expressed confidence that Ujjain would continue to enhance India's pride, potentially becoming a future Greenwich.
Vikram University: The First Library Science Institution in the State
The Chief Minister highlighted that Vikram University in Ujjain was the first university in the state to offer training in library science. He also mentioned the Sindhia Oriental Research Institute, renowned for its vast and rare manuscript collection. Dr. Yadav noted that Padma Shri Dr. Ranganathan, known as the father of library science in India, served as the first visiting professor at this university. He extended his best wishes to all the subject experts and students participating in the symposium, congratulating them on the successful organization of the event.
