President Smt. Droupadi Murmu honours Indore with the 5th National Water Award

Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav has extended his greetings to all the people of the state following the recognition of Indore with the '5th National Water Award' as the best district in the West Zone, conferred by President Smt. Droupadi Murmu. CM Dr. Yadav has said in his message that "Madhya Pradesh is committed to the proper use and conservation of every drop of water and is continuously playing its role in the direction of 'water conservation'. Understanding our moral responsibility for the coming generation, we have laid a network of water structures in the state, renovated old water structures and continuous efforts are being made to increase irrigation capacity.

It is noteworthy that Indore district has been awarded the National Water Award for the best district of the Western region for its significant contribution in water harvesting and water conservation. President Smt. Droupadi Murmu presented this award at the 5th National Water Award-2023 ceremony held at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi. Union Jal Shakti Minister Shri CR Patel and Minister of State Shri V Somanna were also present in the programme. The award was received by Indore Collector Shri Ashish Singh, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Shri Shivam Verma and District Panchayat CEO Siddharth Jain.

Many works done in the catchment areas of rivers

Significant achievements have been made in the field of water conservation in Indore district. Various works have been undertaken in the catchment areas of Ajnar, Balam, Choral, Karam, Moral and Patalpani rivers in the district, which include 366 plantation works, 216 water harvesting works, 60 recharge structures, 90 watershed treatment works and 814 water and soil conservation works. Apart from this, 5 Amrit Sarovar, 4 farm ponds, 5 check dams and 30 gabion mesh structures have been built in the catchment area of ​​​​Balam river.

Old ponds were also Re-juvenated

Under the efforts of water conservation, about 420 works of drain trenching (deepening) have been done, which have increased the water level. Under the Pushkar Dharohar Samridhi Abhiyan, 462 old structures such as ponds, check dams and stop dams have been renovated which has increased the water storage capacity by 16 lakh cubic meters and provided additional irrigation facility for 1500 hectares of agricultural land.

Citizens installed rainwater harvesting system on the roofs of one lakh houses

Water harvesting structures have also been constructed on a large scale in the district, which includes 420 farm ponds, 180 percolation tanks, 100 disposal tanks and 190 check dams. This has increased the water storage capacity in the district by 30 lakh cubic meters. About 25 thousand 500 hectares of area has been brought under drip and sprinkler irrigation systems, benefiting about 16 thousand farmers of the district. Rainwater harvesting systems have been installed by citizens on the roofs of one lakh houses in the district at their own expense and piezometers have been installed at 10 locations to assess the water level. 20 lakh saplings were planted during Hariyali Mahotsav and 2 lakh 55 thousand saplings have been planted in Indore urban area.

The aim of the National Water Awards is to create awareness about the importance of water and to motivate people to adopt best practices for the use of clean water. The 5th National Water Awards have honoured 38 winners including joint winners in 9 categories including Best State, Best District, Best Village Panchayat, Best Urban Local Body, Best School or College, Best Industry, Best Water User Association, Best Institution and Best Civil Society.
