A BJP-backed Sikh group on Wednesday held protests outside Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi’s official residence in New Delhi over his comments on the religious freedom of the community in India.

Gandhi, who is on a three-day visit to the US, drew the ire of Bharatiya Janata Party leaders who criticised the Congress MP for spreading misinformation and maligning the country’s image on foreign soil.

During a discussion at an event in Washington DC, Gandhi said, “The fight is about whether a Sikh is going to be allowed to wear his turban in India or a kada in India. Or he, as a Sikh, is going to be able to go to gurdwara. That’s what the fight is about. And not just for him, for all religions.”
