Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the newly constructed airports in Datia and Satna from Bhopal on May 31, marking a historic milestone in air connectivity for two of Madhya Pradesh's prominent religious destinations. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav will also attend the inauguration ceremony.CM Dr. Yadav has been committed to connecting the state’s major cities to air travel facilities. Datia and Sat na are both significant in terms of religion, industry, and social development. The introduction of air services here will greatly benefit pilgrims traveling to Maa Pitambara Peeth in Datia, Maa Sharda Temple in Maihar, and Chitrakoot Dham, the sacred site associated with Shri Ram’s exile. The new connectivity will ease pilgrimage travel and accelerate the comprehensive development of both regions.
Datia Gets Air Connectivity
The city of Datia, home to the renowned Shaktipeeth of Maa Pitambara, will now be better connected to the rest of the country via air travel. The newly constructed airport, built at a cost of ₹60 crore over 124 acres, features a 1.81 km long and 30-meter-wide runway. In its initial phase, the airport will be capable of handling 19-seater aircraft.
Facilities include parking space for around 50 cars and two check-in counters for passenger convenience. The airport has been designed to accommodate ATR-72 aircraft, and FlyBig Airlines will operate flights four days a week. This airport will not only benefit residents of Datia but also serve as a convenient transit point for devotees visiting Maa Pitambara, giving a significant boost to religious tourism in the region.
Satna Airport to Give New Identity to the Vindhya Region
The industrial capital of the Vindhya region, Satna, now boasts a modern airport built at a cost of ₹37 crore by reconstructing the previously existing airstrip. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) completed the project in record time by October 31, 2024, and the DGCA issued the operational license on December 20, 2024. Key features include a 1,200-meter runway, a 750 sq. meter terminal building, and parking for two aircraft at a time. The airport is now fully equipped to handle 19-seater aircraft. It includes modern amenities such as an ATC tower, fire station, VIP lounge, special facilities for the differently-abled and children, transformer, DG set, ambulance, and security arrangements, all scaled to suit a regional airport.
This new airport is expected to enhance connectivity across the Vindhya region, fostering growth in industry, tourism, education, and healthcare. With Satna’s air connectivity, it will now be more convenient for people across the country and the world to visit the revered Sharda Devi Temple in Maihar, Chitrakoot – the forest abode of Shri Ram, and the Nanaji Deshmukh Gramodaya Vishwavidyalaya, a center of learning in Chitrakoot.
Additionally, the airport will benefit industrialists visiting the mineral- and cement-rich zones around Satna by offering a convenient travel option. Satna’s new airport also opens fresh avenues for pilgrimage tourism and strengthens Prime Minister Shri Modi’s vision of a “New India” — where even smaller towns are empowered with modern air travel infrastructure.
