China Rapidly Expanding Nuclear Arsenal: Report - As NATO Considers Heightened Nuclear Readiness

A recent report has raised concerns about China's rapidly expanding nuclear arsenal, coinciding with discussions among NATO member states regarding increased nuclear readiness.

According to the 2024 report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), China's nuclear stockpile grew from 410 warheads in January 2023 to 500 in January 2024. The report also suggests a potential shift in China's strategy, with the possibility of deploying a small number of nuclear warheads on missiles during peacetime, a new development for the country.

Experts believe that if China continues at this pace, its nuclear stockpile could reach over 700 warheads by 2027 and surpass 1,000 by the end of the decade. However, these numbers would still be considerably lower than the arsenals of the United States and Russia.

Meanwhile, tensions are rising within NATO regarding nuclear weapons. In light of the expanding nuclear programs of China and Russia, NATO member states are considering measures to expedite the deployment of nuclear weapons in the event of a conflict.

This development has become a cause for international concern. The expansion of nuclear arsenals not only threatens global security but also undermines efforts towards nuclear disarmament.
