In the heart of Texas, something extraordinary is taking shape—Marfa, the quirky art haven, is set to become home to the world’s first 3D-printed hotel. El Cosmico, a popular campground known for its bohemian vibe, is expanding with a revolutionary twist: 43 hotel rooms and 18 homes, all crafted by a colossal 3D printer.
This isn’t your typical hotel. The structures will feature sweeping curves, domes, and organic shapes that traditional construction methods could never achieve without astronomical costs. Liz Lambert, the visionary behind El Cosmico, has partnered with Icon, a cutting-edge 3D printing company, and renowned architects to turn this dream into a reality.
The technology behind this marvel is Icon’s Vulcan 3D printer, a 15½-foot-tall, 4.75-ton behemoth capable of producing 12-foot-high curved walls with a custom cement mix called Lavacrete. Imagine a massive, high-tech Play-Doh machine crafting futuristic structures in the middle of the desert. The first rooms are already under construction, and the entire project is set to be completed by 2026.
But this project is more than just an architectural wonder. It’s also addressing local housing challenges. In addition to the hotel, 3D-printed affordable housing units will be built in Marfa, showcasing innovative designs from Icon’s global architecture competition.
For Liz Lambert, this expansion is the fulfillment of a long-held dream. She sees it not only as a chance to enhance Marfa’s cultural appeal but also as an opportunity to boost the local economy. Jason Ballard, Icon’s CEO, brings a personal connection to the project, being a native of West Texas, while Bjarke Ingels, founder of the Bjarke Ingels Group, describes the design as a blend of El Cosmico’s rich history and its futuristic vision, with the 3D-printed structures appearing to rise naturally from the landscape.
