Congress Views JDU's Withdrawal Of Support To BJP-Led Manipur Government As Hint For 'Political Climate Change'

The Congress party on Wednesday responded to the reports of JDU's withdrawal of support from the BJP-led government in Manipur.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh in a social media post said, "Today, JD(U) withdrew support to the BJP Govt in Manipur. Yesterday, JD(U) opposed the new UGC Rules which have been announced by the Modi Govt to control top appointments to all universities."

Jairam Ramesh viewed the latest political development in Manipur as a hint "heralding political climate change."

The decision of the Manipur unit of JDU comes amid reports of "disagreement" among NDA parties over UGC draft rules.

According to The Indian Express reports, BJP's key ally at the Centre, JDU has criticised the University Grants Commission (UGC)'s draft regulations 2025 for curbing the role of elected state governments in the field of higher education.

The changes proposed by the government aim to vest more power with Governors in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors (V-Cs) in state universities.

JD(U) national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan told The Indian Express, "By limiting the role of elected governments in the appointment of Vice-Chancellors, the efforts of the state government in the field of education will be discouraged to a great extent."

The JDU has officially withdrawn support from the BJP-led government in Manipur. JDU, part of the NDA alliance at the Centre, announced its lone MLA in the state assembly will now sit in the Opposition.

In a letter to the Governor, Manipur JDU chief Kshetrimayum Biren Singh cited the defection of five JDU MLAs to the BJP after the 2022 assembly elections and the party's alignment with the INDIA bloc as reasons for the withdrawal.
