A pledge led to arrest of Punjab robber couple: All about 'Daku Haseena'

Mandeep Kaur alias Daku Haseena had pledged to offer prayers at Hemkund Sahib in Kedarnath and Badrinath after the successful execution of a heist. But little did she know that her vow would eventually land her in prison.

Daku Haseena of Ludhiana's Dehlon village, absconding after a daring Rs 8.4-crore robbery, was arrested by the Punjab Police from Uttarakhand's Chamoli. Haseena has three brothers, and has been married thrice.

Haseena, who had studied only till Class 10 and wanted to be rich, held five employees of the CMS Securities company captive at their Ludhiana office on the day of the robbery - June 10.

On the run since, Mandeep Kaur and her husband Jaswinder Singh could not evade the police for long. A well-thought trap by the Punjab Police led to their arrest in less than 10 days.

Apart from the couple, the police also caught Gaurav, another accused, from Gidderbaha in Punjab. So far, the police have arrested nine of the 12 accused in the case.

HOW DID FREE DRINK SERVICE HELP POLICE?
The Punjab Police had information that Mandeep Kaur and her husband were planning to flee to Nepal. But before that, they would visit various shrines, including Haridwar, Kedarnath and Hemkund Sahib.

However, it was difficult for the police to identify the couple in a huge crowd of devotees visiting the Sikh shrine in Uttarakhand. Thus, a plan was hatched - the police would serve free drinks to the pilgrims.

As the police had thought, the couple approached the drink stall during their visit. They had their faces covered to avoid getting identified and caught. But they uncovered their faces to take a sip of the drink served by the police in disguise and were identified.

COUPLE CHASED BY POLICE, DETAINED
But Mandeep Kaur and Jaswinder Singh were not immediately arrested. The police let them offer their prayers at the Hemkund Sahib before chasing them for some distance.

The operation to catch them was called 'let's catch the queen bee'. According to Ludhiana top cop Mandeep Singh Sidhu, Rs 12 lakh was recovered from Mandeep's two-wheeler, and Rs 9 lakh from her husband's Barnala house.
