Dalit student beaten, threatened for drinking water from handpump near temple, 7 booked
Gautam, a BA student and kabaddi player, had been targeted by the group for frequenting the public ground near the temple. Despite filing a complaint with the police, Gautam alleged that no action was taken

According to authorities on Saturday, a Dalit man was attacked by seven people for reportedly drinking water from a handpump next to a temple.
Police claimed that the victim's name is Abhishek Gautam, a 24-year-old.
The event took place on July 26. The attackers physically attacked Gautam, pressing his neck with their foot "until his tongue protruded," according to the police complaint, and used casteist remarks. Superintendent of Police Meenakshi Katyayan stated that they also threatened to hurt him and his family if he reported the event to the police.
The group had targeted Gautam, a kabaddi player and BA student, because he was often seen on the public space next to the temple. According to the complaint, they had previously advised him not to sit on the temple or use the hand pump.
Gautam claimed that despite registering a complaint with the police, nothing happened. He then petitioned this special court here in an attempt to get justice.
On Thursday, the court directed the filing of a complaint against the seven defendants under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Right now, the accused are escaping.The FIR was filed on October 17 itself, in accordance with the court's orders.
