Google Study: 90% of Tech Workers Now Use AI at Work

A new Google report shows that artificial intelligence (AI) has quickly become mainstream in the tech industry. In a survey of 5,000 technology professionals worldwide, 90% said they use AI in their work—up 14% from last year.
AI is most commonly used for coding, debugging, and documentation. According to Google’s DORA Research Division, “most” teams across the company now rely on AI daily. Tools like Google’s Gemini Code Assist have become a standard part of engineering workflows.
Still, trust remains uneven. About 46% of respondents said they “somewhat” trust AI-generated code, 23% said they trust it only a little, and 20% said they strongly trust it. While 31% reported that AI has made their code quality “slightly better,” 30% said it had no effect.
The rise of AI has also put pressure on entry-level workers. Data shows unemployment among recent computer science and engineering graduates is rising, and U.S. job listings for software engineers dropped 71% between February 2022 and August 2025.
From giants like Google and Microsoft to startups such as Replit and Anysphere, the race to offer AI-powered development tools is heating up. These tools range from free versions to premium options costing $45 per month.
Ryan J. Salva, who oversees Google’s coding tools, says AI isn’t yet a “fully autonomous developer.” It can fix system problems, but still requires human oversight and safeguards. With a touch of humor, he added: “Software development is a bit like the fashion industry. A new style of jeans shows up, and everyone wants to try it. AI is the latest trend everyone’s chasing.”
