October 10, 2014.
Today, on World Mental Health Day, people and communities around the world are united behind the motto "Mental Health is a Universal Human Right." The goal is to raise awareness and promote understanding and acceptance of mental health issues.
Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which a person realizes his or her potential, is able to cope with appropriate life pressures, is able to engage in productive and meaningful work, and is able to contribute to his or her community.
Mental health conditions can have a negative impact on individuals, families and communities. They can lead to disability, loss of productivity and social isolation. They can also increase the risk of suicide.
Regardless of the severity of the problem, mental health is often stigmatized and misunderstood. This prevents people from getting the help they need.
On World Mental Health Day, it’s important to remember that everyone has the right to good mental health. Like the right to physical health or education, it is a basic human right.
We all have a role to play in promoting positive mental health. We can start by being open and honest about mental health. We can support mental health services and advocate for better mental health care.
Here are some ways to celebrate World Mental Health Day:
Talk about mental health. Start talking to your friends, family, and co-workers about mental health. Share your experience, or listen to the experiences of others.
Learn more about mental health. There are many resources available online and locally
